Guangyuan Yu was born in Shanghai . In 1934, he interchanged Tsinghua University from Shanghai Datong University and graduated from Department of Physics of Tsinghua University . In 1937 he joined in CPC. In 1939, he was appointed as director of Yan'an Zhongshan Library and has ever been director of CPC Central Library, professor of Beijing University Library, deputy director of Theory Propaganda of CPC Central Propaganda Department, commissioner and Standing Committee of CAS philosophic and social department, deputy general secretary of Scientific Planning Commission, deputy director of Science and Technology Commission, vice director of State Science and Technology Commission, director of Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought Institute, Commissioner of State Council Degree Commission, vice president and consultant of Chinese Social and Science society, honorary president of Beijing University for Nationalities, member of Central Advisory Commission, consultant of China International Economic and Technological Cooperation Foundation. In February 1993 he was elected to be vice chairman of Hainan Development Foundation. In 1994 he took the post of honorary professor for Shenzhen University . In the same year, he was appointed to be honorary adviser of the Third China Tourism Association.
