"China listed 100", first published in 2001 was at that time influenced by “list of global 500 largest enterprises” in American magazine “Fortune”. It was suggested that Chinese enterprises should expand their scale through mergers and reorganization. But Warton Economic Institute considered the “Strong” as the top priority of Chinese enterprises. First of all is to optimize the quality of their assets and to enhance the competitive capability. So Warton launched “ China listed 100 in 2000” , which took the total profits as the main ranking index. Selecting total profit as the indicator not only removed money-losing enterprises, but also reflected the company scale, the profitability and development potential of companies and therefore, was more reasonable.

In the same year, the first China Business Top 100 was opened. Since then, CBT 100 has become the annual pageant of China 's financial elites.
